History

The RagaMuffin is an American pedigreed kitty. The history is very interesting in that the RagaMuffin is a hybrid of the Ragdoll.  The Ragdolls were created by Ann Baker back in the early 1960s.  She used a feral cat and Josephine (a white Persian-Angora kitty) to mate.  Along came Daddy Warbucks and the Ragdoll originated. With out-crossings, she eventually patented the Ragdoll in her name. She had many strings attached to her cats. As she aged, she was questioned about some of her practices and so some breeders formed a group and separated from her. They began their own breed, calling it RagaMuffins.  These foundation breeders were very careful in maintaining high breeding standards to assure the health of of the RagaMuffin breed as well as preserving its lovely temperament and personality.  The RagaMuffin was derived from Persians, Ragdolls, Birmans, and Burmese kitties. Their rare colors of minks, sepias, etc.

were unique. Today the RagaMuffin comes in an array of  rainbow colors.....literally dozens of color combinations.

The RagaMuffin was recognized by the ACFA and RagaMuffins were shown in championship classes in 2001. Many believe that the RagaMuffin is the ultimate kitty, the esteemed purrfect cat! They seldom mat and are easy to groom. They are extremely fit and healthy, not to mention their superb intelligence and sensibility. They are loving, loyal, and can be trained. They can be walked on a harness. All of this -- and to top it all off, they are handsomely beautiful.

Because the RagaMuffin is a rare breed, there are few breeders. Many of the breeders live in Florida and other breeders are scattered elsewhere.

The RAG is a tightly knit group of serious cat breeders who are keeping the RagaMuffin, a rare breed, the purrfect kitty.  The health of the kitty is our first priority.  Temperament/personality are important.  There are some people who advertise offering them for sale, but there is some question as to whether they are truly RagaMuffins. These 'RagaMuffins' may have been bred with Ragdolls or possibly Persians, but this is no longer allowed as of January 2006. The RagaMuffin may be bred to Siberians.  Why?  This is because there are not enough RagaMuffins being bred and so out-crossing is allowed to expand the RagaMuffin gene pool. Believe me, I researched high and low before I found the purrfect Siberians. www.jajasiberians.com   Champion Dauria Leda is from Russia and a jewel. I am lucky to have her. She was not registerable and I am sure that is one reason I was able to obtain her. However, I persisted and tracked down her breeder, Tatiana, in Russia (Dauria), who could communicate with me in English. She was able to provide the necessary Russian papers in English and Leda is now registered with ACFA, CFA and UFO.  Grand Champion Inspiration Erek of Ja Ja is amazing and truly inspirational. I think anyone who visits Ja Ja would have to agree, he deserves his title of being the #1 top winning Siberian in the USA for 2007 and 2008. I have been able to keep in touch with his breeder, Jenny Carter, and we continue to stay in contact. I cross my fingers that she will visit the states and see Erek and his kids. I live with ten Siberians (three kittens are out of Erek ex Leda).  The Siberians are very much like the RagaMuffins and the breeds are somewhat difficult to tell apart. The Siberians are claimed to be hypoallergenic. Both breeds are amazing and both are the ultimate... no question, they are 'prestigious' cats to adopt into your family and they truly become family members.                        www.jajasiberians.com

HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy)

Our RagaMuffins and Siberians are screened to rule-out heart disease and prevent passing HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) to their babies.

Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a heart disease in which the heart muscle enlarges and thickens. It is the most common heart disease among cats. It may develop and progress over time, with its early signs being too subtle to detect.  All of a sudden, a seemingly healthy cat may become ill very quickly and/or die suddenly. HCM prevents the heart from functioning properly.

Standard

The RagaMuffin is a medium sized kitty. The males are bigger, weighing 15-20 pounds and the females weigh 10-15 pounds. RagaMuffins can be on the small size or the large size. So, it is possible, just like humans, to have a large-sized individual. When kitties are altered/neutered/spayed, they often put on additional weight. They have a fatty pad in their lower abdomen (omentum) and when lifted they go limp. The Muffin is a very slow maturing kitty often reaching age 3-1/2 to four before attaining full maturity. The coat is medium length... living in Florida, the coats are not as long as they might be in cooler climates. Every color is allowable, they come in

many color combinations. It is not unusual to have a "rainbow litter" meaning each kitten is of a different color. I especially like the mink which requires a certain gene to obtain. Besides our emphasis on showing our kitties at cat shows, we are particularly thrilled with the color variations we have been obtaining in our breeding program.

We are looking for sweet expressions and a nicely balanced kitty. Some Muffins have the gene which makes them a McTabby... Most RagaMuffins are mitted... (white paws). I especially love their walnut rounded (wide-open) eye which gives them a special expression of looking 'sweet,' a twinkling effect as if they were smiling. In some of the picx, you can actually see the inquisitiveness and keenness in their eyes.

Showing Cats with CFA, ACFA, UFO

Ja Ja focuses on breeding for excellence and we are actively showing our kitties throughout the southeast region of ACFA, UFO and CFA.  However, first and foremost is maintaining the health of our kitties.  We prescribe freedom to run and play in the house and out on the lanai.  Because we are home, we keep a watchful eye on our kitties and keep the environment extremely clean. All of our kittens have champion parents. Some of our RagaMuffins are Grand Champions. We would consider Ja Ja to be a show home.

Personality/Temperament

The personalities and temperaments of our kittens/kitties RagaMuffins and Siberians are just the very best.  They are the ultimate and most prestigious of cats. They are so very much like little dogs and learn quickly. When I am out, our kitties are there to greet me or when we both come in together, there they are to greet us....  They have a huge receptive language base. All of our kitties know each of their own names as well as ours, the birds, Douglas' and all the other kitties' names....  Shake the vitamin bottle and no matter where they are, they hear it and come running.... www.healthypetnet.com/jaja  They are extremely loyal and need personal human attention. If not socialized, they will not live up to their RagaMuffin/Siberian esteem.  It is so important to spend time with them.  Since I live with many, I have learned how they go through various stages and I attribute this to their slow maturity (3-4 years of age before full maturity). Trust is a very big factor with them. One interesting aspect of these kitties is that the parents of the kittens are equally mindful and they will look after (and even nurse) each others’ kittens.  The RagaMuffin and Siberian breeds are particularly fond of their babies and adolescents.  The dads are often found lying with the kittens and grooming them... hugging them, playing with them.  Oddly, they are excellent caregivers and very nurturing.

Visitors

We love having visitors and we are very easy to locate in Cape Coral just across the river from Fort Myers. Or coming from the North/West from I-75... just 30 minutes.....

Ja Ja = Excellence

James and Janice = Ja Ja

I have had many pets over the last 40 years, ranging from rescued wild creatures to nursing a homeless, defenseless opossum. A dog breeder for 20 years, I showed my Bearded Collies at the prestigious Westminster AKC show in New York City.  I showed at all the prominent shows, like Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Detroit, Toronto and traveled a 500 mile radius three or four weekends out of the month. I have been to every state except Hawaii and Alaska traveling with my Beardies/PONs.

I was a BCCA national officer and also held offices at the state level.  Later, I showed Polish Lowland Sheepdogs... obviously my heart has been with the rare breeds and watching them develop into the most desirable pedigree breeds that families wanted.  Jim and I have had a Ragdoll, Himalayans, and Persians.  We now have RagaMuffins and Siberians exclusively. We have been breeding cats for 15 years. We have two talking parrots, Lucy, our African Grey who does all the sound effects, and Magnum, an Amazon Yellow Nape who talks non-stop and sings operatic arias. Douglas, a small Maltese who thinks he
is part kitty-cat acts as our kittens' 'Dutch Uncle.'  Jim is a computer expert and I am a psychotherapist with a private practice in my home.  www.attention-disorder.com
